Significance of the 2008 Presidential Election

The biggest responsibility you have when you turn eighteen is to vote. When you vote for people to represent you in government you are exercising your right of self-government. If you are unhappy with the job your representatives are doing, it is your responsibility to help elect other candidates in the next election. The 2008 Presidential Election has come a long way since the year 1920 when women were first allowed to vote.

The significance of this presidential candidacy is that there are two special Senators running for president. The first woman candidate to run for president since the 19th Century is Hillary Clinton. She is the wife of former President Bill Clinton. Senator Clinton has continued to help children and families in need and has been a national leader for homeland security. Her competitor, Barack Obama is the first African American to run for president since Jesse Jackson in 1984. Barack Obama has focused on ending the war in Iraq and health care issues. Both candidates are currently in close competition for the presidency. If you are eighteen or older be an effective citizen and vote!

Jobs Wanted in Belle Glade

Many teens in Belle Glade need jobs and there are not enough jobs for them. A group of students at the Pioneer Park Beacon Center think the Mayor and other City Officials should help provide more jobs for the teens in the community. Some of the jobs students are interested in are working at local fast food restaurants, supermarkets and day care facilities. These jobs will help teens stay out of trouble and provide for their own needs.

Teens work to make money. With this money, they help their families provide for the future. Many teens open bank accounts and are able to save money for college. Working teaches responsibility and prepares them for the future. If you or any one you know has the opportunity to get a job, take the initiative and apply.
